A Geographic Map Archive of Diasporic Salvadorans in the U.S.

There has been a significant increase the Salvadoran population present in the United States after the 1980’s civil war in El Salvador. According the Pew Research Center and the 2010 U.S Census Bureau, Salvadorans are the third largest Latinx population in the U.S.

The question remains, however, where in the United States are most diasporic Salvadorans concentrated? What states, counties, and cities?

The goal of this website is to host a visual map archive of the Salvadoran population in the United States that adequately represents and illustrates the development, growth, and presence of the Salvadoran diaspora, specifically in the United States.

The first phase of this map archive will focus on presenting thematic maps (GIS population maps) of Salvadorans in key states, counties, and cities with the largest concentration of Salvadorans outside of El Salvador. The second phase will be to create dynamic maps (GIS landmark maps and Google maps) of the Salvadoran population and design a user-friendly website that easily presents and interprets the data.

Thus, the purpose of this website is to make this information easily accessible and digestible, and also begin constructing a geographic archive of Salvadorans living in the United States that can provide visual representations and greater understanding of a community that has been historically ignored and marginalized despite its significant presence in the country and around the world.
